New York: Ecology of the Region, History of Urbanism and Reflections of Ecological Sensitivity in Architecture
The urbanization of New York City follows the precedent of settlements which were formed around the world due to convenient location and ecological advantages of their region. Despite the colonization by numerous foreign forces arriving from Europe removing its indigenous ecological communities from the island, early efforts to protect the estuaries of its fresh water streams at a critical time of the American Industrial Revolution allowed this glamorous settlement on Manhattan-The Island of Many Hills, to thrive over the last five centuries. Contemporary pressures of growth and increased density require a clear understanding of what lies below, and how this urban settlement once established on a land of rich resources can continue to thrive without compromising its future.
